Wip Wednesday: Picture Perfect (C3)

For Wip Wednesday, an excerpt from PICTURE PERFECT (first draft), chapter 3. (Quick story summary: In which two conmen try to con each other, both doing so without realizing the other is also a conman. M/M Romance)

”Hello,” he says to the cellphone, putting it on speaker and muting the TV. He curls up on the couch with his legs under him and tries to quickly get into character.

”It’s James,” James says, his voice hoarse. There’s the sound of him yawning, and Jesse’s lips twitches slightly. He ducks his head. James continues, ”I was wondering if you’re free tomorrow, and maybe feel like going to the botanical gardens with me?”

He resists the urge to smile in victory, instead lowering his voice like he’s nervous. ”Like on a date?” Jesse asks, leaning closer to the phone. His eyebrows furrow.

”Yes,” James answers. ”I had a lovely time with you last night, and I’d really like to get to know you better. How about you? You feel like having long and uncomfortably conversations about our likes and dislikes? We could even spice it up and talk about the weather.”
